New events throughout the year...

Accessible Contemporary Music is a non-profit devoted to contemporary concert music composers. Wednesday, October 12, 2005  enjoy a concert The Sound of Silent Film, @ 8:00pm at the Chopin Theatre.  New silent films from Chicago directors are set to the scores of some of Chicago's freshest  composers. While it's nice for film buffs and music devotees to have a medium of celebration for their vision, it's not too highbrow for the rest of us. Find more information at http://www.acmusic.org/.

In the theme of being in costume, we jump back to the 1920s with our next spot Tommy Guns Garage. Located at 2114 South Wabash, this lounge bills itself as an "interactive speakeasy" with a musical comedy revue.

Outside of TheStoneJones' usual budget, the evening runs around $50-60 per person depending on the size of the crowd you come with. But in the vein of Halloween excess, this might be okay for your entertainment plans.  If you think you're not into the themed performance dinner theatre thing, give this one consideration. It's so over the top that it can only be experienced as fun. Find more information at http://www.tommygunsgarage.com/

At first blush, you hear  International Museum of Surgical Science and think school field trip.  Not to fear, the museum is more than a collection of antique scapels and forceps for the younguns.  Take a perusal around the 4 floors of the facility or pick up an interesting guided tour at 2pm on Saturdays.  Brutal Craft is an engaging video about the history of surgery; probably best appreciated through adult life experience.  Of course there are exhibits organized by theme and discipline, but surprisingly there's a contemporary art exhibition devoted to anatomy, disease/wellness and other medical issues.  Find more information at http://www.imss.org/. A well spent afternoon for $6.00; especially handy when you're not quite sure what to do with young adult relatives who arrive in town for the weekend.

Since 1919, The Oriental Institute has been dedicated to documenting and preserving the culture of the ancient Near East.  While this facility includes laboratories and museum galleries filled with artifacts from Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Israel and Turkey; it also hosts an exhibit of dictionaries and epigraphy, the study of interpreting inscriptions and pictoral reliefs, one of only a few in the United States. The University of Chicago serves as the foundation for the institute; visit their website http://www.oi.uchicago.edu/OI/default.html or find them at 1155 East 58th Street. Bring a camera, it's permitted, you may wish to get a shot of things you will not find everyday.

Open to the public on Saturdays 1pm-4pm, you can drop by Hot Glass Chicago, 1250 N Central Park Ave, to see a glass blowing demonstration by the pros. If you've always said, "I should try that", there is an Experience Glass Session for $50;  You'll spend 30 minutes with an experienced artist/staff member making a flower or a small glass cup. If you prefer to observe beauty rather than be part of the creative process, The gallery hosts two socials, Second Saturday from 6-10pm and Third Monday Jazz Nights, 8pm-10pm. Here, you can just hang out and chat it up in cool surroundings. Check out their full schedule http://www.chicagohotglass.com.
