WhirlyBall is grown-ups gone mad inside a ton of fun. You zoom around the court in highly charged bumper cars trying to hit whiffle balls into a net at the end of the court. At $10 bucks for 1/2 hour it's a little pricey but the adrenaline rush precludes it from being an all-afternoon affair anyway. Make arrangements ahead of time as the bulk of the court time is geared toward corporate parties. Find more information at http://www.whirlyball.com/

New events throughout the year...

Accessible Contemporary Music is a non-profit devoted to contemporary concert music composers. Wednesday, October 12, 2005  enjoy a concert The Sound of Silent Film, @ 8:00pm at the Chopin Theatre.  New silent films from Chicago directors are set to the scores of some of Chicago's freshest composers. While it's nice for film buffs and music devotees to have a medium of celebration for their vision, it's not too highbrow for the rest of us. Find more information at http://www.acmusic.org/

There aren't many places in Chicago were you can walk in off the street and play drums in a a three-tiered drumpit. Welcome to Rhythm"a bar and live music club focused on percussion", located at 1108 West Randolph. On Friday and Saturday nights, the club hosts Drum Nights, where you can learn to play drums at the 9pm beginner lesson (drums provided by the facility) for only $8. Hang out or show your stuff in the drum circle beginning at 10pm.  If you want a relaxing, beautiful atmosphere, visit the lounge  (the walls are padded against the sound from the drumpit amphitheatre) and sip on one of the signature drinks.  Since the club is sometimes closed for private parties, find scheduling info at http://www.drumallnight.com.  Perfect for the been there, done that folks.    /l/500/523_s.jpg

/l/600/684_s.jpg Brew and View...as it sounds; catch a movie, have a beer. Located at 3145 North Sheffield (near Belmont on Red Line), they sport a few different beers and a cheap $5 admission.   Not the type of spot for your mom if she's into the cleanliness of a ciniplex but if she's up for a movie house that's a bit more gritty and urbane, she'll have a lovely time. They show 2nd and 3rd run films as well as cult and underground classics; perfect for folks like me who never "get around to seeing it when it first comes out". For more information find them at http://www.brewview.com

Music Box Theatre is an ornate small movie house located at 3373 N. Southport Ave. The focus here is on independent, cult and feature film. Built in 1929, it has gone thru a few incantations from a second-run feature film theatre to porn flick house to foreign film cinema.  Presently, it carries a variety of captivating films not seen at a Loews. New York Doll,  running November 25-December 1, 2005 is the story of a member of the glam rock group of the same name 30 years later working for the Church of Jesus Christ-Latter...more
